This was the case of the Notre Dame special teams squad getting the job done. They didn’t go above and beyond, and that’s because they didn’t have to. What did kicker Justin Yoon do when he was sent out to make a field goal? He made the field goal. And what did punter Tyler Newsome do when he was called onto the field? He executed a punt. Neither were fantastic, but again, they did what they needed to do to get the win.

Yoon made his only attempted field goal of the contest and also nailed all five of his extra points. His lone blunder came on a kickoff sent out of bounds, but a smart player such as himself will likely see a long time before doing that again.

Newsome wasn’t as spectacular as he usually is either, landing a couple of balls in the end zone rather than pinning the Spartans. Again, there were many factors that contributed to a lesser punt average such as Notre Dame’s ability to get further down the field, but a small hiccup in Newsome’s year is nothing to be concerned about.

In regard to the return team, Chris Finke was once again swallowed up on punt returns, but C.J. Sanders flourished in his kick return game. This special teams unit has been very reliable up to this point and it would be surprising to see them set off track by one average performance.
