With defense playing such a big role in the Trojans’ win at Cal, the last game ball deserves to go to another key defender in the victorious effort. After a comprehensive effort, linebacker Uchenna Nwosu deserves recognition for his play in the win. He was all over the field Saturday, helping the Trojans shut down a Cal offense that had looked quite good through the first quarter of the 2017 season.

His fumble recovery early in the fourth quarter shut down any hopes of a Cal upset in the battle of unbeaten Pac-12 schools. Nwosu added a quarterback hurry, knocked down a pass, and racked up four tackles. Playing strongly against both the run and the pass, he helped shut down the Golden Bears in the fourth quarter as the Trojans sealed victory.

The senior outside linebacker got better as the game went on, playing a key role as USC eventually pulled away for the 30-20 win. Nwosu put up one of the most complete performances of his career, closing down Cal both when they tried to run and when they passed the ball. Nwosu walks away from Memorial Stadium with the final USC game ball for Week 4 thanks to his strong showing on Saturday afternoon.
