Wide receiver C.J. Carroll had himself a career game against the Old Dominion Monarchs. The redshirt junior caught two receptions for 10 yards and his first career touchdown receptions.

Carroll appeared in 19 games prior to the game against Old Dominion. He caught 18 receptions for 258 receiving yards in 2016. Most of his production came in a reserve role, but he’s another player emerging as a weapon for the Virginia Tech offense.

After being used in both the running and passing game most of last season, he’s emerged as a reliable receiving target. The offense is in need of weapons to replace what was lost from 2016’s production.

He’s made good progress despite being 5-foot-8 and 173 pounds. He’s caught seven passes for 78 receiving yards and a touchdown so far this season.

Carroll has started in one game this season while appearing as a reserve in the past three games. The Hokies didn’t open up the playbook too much in Week 4 as wide receiver Cam Phillips’ production of 106 receiving yards, most of which came in the first half.
