UTSA is the last undefeated team standing in Conference USA after they blew out Texas State by 30 over the past weekend. The Roadrunners, it must be noted, lost their opportunity to face Houston in non-conference play after Hurricane Harvey canceled their season opener. But UTSA has an all-important win over a Power Five program under its belt, and could challenge the bigger names for the New Year’s Six invitation this season.

Against Texas State, running back Jalen Rhodes led the way with 174 yards and two scores on just 15 carries. He added another 27 yards on four receptions, finishing the day with over 200 total yards of offense. Dalton Sturm did not throw a touchdown for the Roadrunners, but he was an efficient 17-of-25 for 212 yards. UTSA’s stout defense held the Bobcats to 10-of-27 passing and only 37 rushing yards on 32 carries. It was a comprehensive rout on the road for the Roadrunners.

Second-year head coach Frank Wilson has the Roadrunners quietly in position to surprise everyone this season. After a bye in Week 5, UTSA opens conference play with a visit from Southern Miss. Conference USA is one of two Group of Five leagues, along with the Sun Belt, who have yet to place a team into a major bowl game during the BCS and College Football Playoff eras. If Wilson’s crew keeps playing at this level, that could all change this season.
