3. The turnover battle heavily favors Notre Dame

Notre Dame currently sits just outside of the top 20 in turnover differential, holding a +4 margin over their first four games. This margin would be even more impressive had Notre Dame’s offense survived some early troubles holding onto the football, but that is inconsequential now as the Irish have seemed to improve on that front over the last couple of games.

Miami of Ohio follows close behind with a +3 turnover margin, but their low level of competition brings that number closer down to Earth. However, they have still displayed a resiliency against losing the turnover battle. Things will get much more difficult against a defense that has recovered five fumbles and turned four interceptions, setting up for what could be a big day for a stout Irish defense.

Turnovers were key for the Irish in last week’s win over Michigan State, and they will likely look to replicate that performance against the RedHawks in this week’s contest. With players like Drue Tranquill and Shaun Crawford lining up week in and week out, the Irish will be in more than capable hands down the stretch.

With that said, Miami is likely well aware of Notre Dame’s ability to force turnovers. Of course, knowledge wasn’t good enough for a Michigan State offense that turned the ball over numerous times. Miami will need to have everything together if they plan on making this a mistake-free football game.
