2391. . (3-1). Previous: . West Virginia Mountaineers. 23. team

West Virginia is one of five teams in the AP Top 25 that stayed on the sidelines this week. The Mountaineers take a well-deserved rest after starting the year 3-1. Their only loss remains a narrow defeat in the season opener against a ranked Virginia Tech team.

Entering Week 5, West Virginia was the top team in the country in terms of generating first downs. Through four games, the Mountaineers moved the chains 113 times, an average of more than 28 first downs per game. One of the nation’s most potent offenses is averaging nearly seven touchdowns and just under 600 total yards per game.

After the break, West Virginia heads to Fort Worth for a showdown against a top-10 TCU squad. If the Mountaineers hope to position themselves as a dark-horse contender in the Big 12, a big win against the Horned Frogs would go a long way toward realizing that goal. For now, though, they will remain in one of the last five positions in this week’s AP Top 25.
