Virginia Tech Football: 5 overreactions from Week 5 loss to Clemson
2. Josh Jackson needs to work on his accuracy
The Virginia Tech Hokies had a heck of a time throwing the ball against the Clemson Tigers. Many would say quarterback Josh Jackson needs to work on his accuracy but the kid has an arm and all the accuracy in the world.
Jackson finished the game 29-of-44 (65.9) with 251 passing yards, a passing touchdown and two interceptions. He had a solid passing completion percentage in the game but forcing the issue is what kept him from progressing.
His struggles, however, came in the form of “tunnel vision”. He locked onto wide receiver Cam Phillips way too much in this game and so did the Clemson Tigers.
Phillips didn’t have a terrible game. He finished with seven receptions for 74 receiving yards but he didn’t have a touchdown for the second-straight week.
The Hokies have solid targets in the passing game. True freshman Sean Savoy had four receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown but what’s missing is proper usage of the tight end.
Jackson missed a wide-open Chris Cunningham a few times when forcing the ball in Phillips’ direction. They’ll need to work on Jackson’s progressions this week as staring down receivers is no good in this day and age.
