College Football: Group of Five Week 6 power rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Toledo had a bye week in Week 5, and Jason Candle’s team needed it after falling big in Miami a week earlier. The Rockets fell 52-30 on the road to the Hurricanes after putting their ACC opponent on the ropes to start the contest. But one loss to a Power Five blueblood is not going to eliminate them from New Year’s Six contention this year.
Their bid for a major bowl appearance will all come down to how Toledo performs in conference play. The Rockets open MAC play on Saturday with a big showdown against West Division hopeful Eastern Michigan at the Glass Bowl. Toledo has the advantage of getting to play other division contenders Northern Illinois and Western Michigan at home.
Through four games, senior quarterback Logan Woodside is among the nation’s top passers. Woodside averages more than 335 passing yards per game, and he has thrown 11 touchdowns against just one interception so far. As a team, the Rockets are scoring 41.5 points per game to rank in the top 15 nationally.
Nobody in the MAC is undefeated at this point, and Toledo still looks like the top team in the conference. They will have to prove it over the next two months, but if the Rockets manage to win the MAC for the first time since 2004 they will have a strong case to present to the College Football Playoff selection committee.
