1. Notre Dame records three interceptions

The Irish have been excellent in the turnover battle thus far, falling within the top 15 in turnover margin. Notre Dame’s linebacker corps has been involved in many of the team’s turnovers, but the Irish secondary has had some main contributors as well. Cornerback Shaun Crawford currently leads the team with two interceptions, followed by Julian Love and his one pick.

North Carolina quarterback Chazz Surratt has done fairly well this season, throwing five touchdowns to two interceptions. However, UNC head coach Larry Fedora has been adamant on giving senior Brandon Harris some time despite his 1:3 touchdown to interception ratio. The Irish defense could benefit nicely from some quality time with Harris.

Notre Dame has been consistent in taking away the football, recording at least one interception in all but one game. North Carolina, on the other hand, has given the ball away a total of five times through the air, with two multiple-interception games. Should the Tar Heels continue with a quarterback by committee approach, don’t be surprised if the Irish secondary has a big day.

Notre Dame’s issues on the turnover front was a point of emphasis for Kelly this summer, made clear through the team’s addition of defensive coordinator Mike Elko. The former Wake Forest coordinator has already seen significant progress in his defense, but a three interception performance will be a great boost of confidence heading into the Irish’s matchup with USC.
