Loser: Oklahoma Sooners (No. 3 to No. 12)

Well, the road to the College Football Playoff stops here for quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners fell in Norman to the Iowa State Cyclones, 38-31, after entering the game as 31-point favorites.

The Sooners have lost a game as double-digit favorites in their last seven seasons as history saw itself on repeat Saturday. The turning point in the game came when running back Trey Sermon fumbled the ball on the Iowa State 5-yard line.

Oklahoma had the ball and lead 24-16 when Sermon coughed up the ball on a 2nd-and-goal play. The Sooners would go on to miss a field goal on their next scoring drive. Iowa State scored on a 57-yard pass after that and went on another 75-yard scoring drive after that.

The Oklahoma Sooners were unable to answer back on their final drive, losing in heartbreaking fashion. Baker Mayfield didn’t play terribly at all. He went 24-of-33 with 306 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. It was the Sooners defense that couldn’t seem to answer the bell, allowing 449 total yards of offense, 368 of those yards came through the air.

Next up for Oklahoma is bitter rival Texas in the Red River Shootout. There will be fireworks!
