Brandon Wimbush headed into the 2017 season with significant amounts of both hope and doubt surrounding his first year as a starter. He impressed early against Temple, but the excitement was quickly quelled after he struggled against Georgia.

However, Wimbush has since gone on to impress in great capacity, contributing mostly on the ground in Notre Dame’s most recent wins. After being replaced by Ian Book following a leg injury, Wimbush expects to return against USC following next week’s bye. Speaking of Book, he was less than impressive in last week’s win, but still proved his ability to serve as a backup.

Wimbush’s main criticism has been his inability to throw the football. He leaves the Irish offense quite predictable, but there’s only so much most defenses can do against such a strong offensive line coupled with one of the nation’s best backfields. Wimbush will look to see just how far his running prowess can carry him before he’s forced to make plays with his arm.

Worst Game:

Wimbush’s worst came against, you guessed it, Georgia. While he threw for 211 yards, a season high, he was unable to gain any traction on the ground. Wimbush finished with one yard and a score on 16 carries.

Best Game:

Brandon Wimbush had his best game of the season on the road against Boston College. The first year starter threw for only 96 yards, but set a Notre Dame quarterback rushing record with 207 yards and four touchdowns.
