Coaching – B

Right or wrong, head coach Dana Holgorsen is going to be judged on results, specifically results in big games. WVU hasn’t beaten a ranked team in its last nine tries, so no matter how well the offense performs, that streak falls on Holgo.

The good news is that, eventually, the results will turn. Tony Gibson is a proven defensive coach, and you know there will be plenty of offense to go around with Holgorsen at the helm. Sure, his play calling in certain situations could improve, but with the way the offense has performed so far, it’s given Holgorsen a pretty long leash.  The way they can rack up yards and points, you have to like their chances.

Final Grade – B

The Mountaineers have performed about as well as could be expected so far in 2017, but there’s still room for improvement.  The problem with that, though, is the schedule doesn’t break very favorably.  There’s still Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Oklahoma to deal with.  The always-high expectations of Mountaineer fans are going to be tested in the second half of the season.  Let’s hope that the team can finally meet them.
