Washington Football: 5 overreactions from loss to Arizona State in Week 7
1. Head coach Chris Petersen’s seat is warm
The Washington Huskies have nothing to hang their head about in their loss. It’s better to lose early in the season than late, I always say. They were simply outplayed and outcoached and couldn’t seem to put it together on a day when a lot of other top teams seemed to be having the same problem.
They were simply outplayed and outcoached and couldn’t seem to put it together on a day when a lot of other top teams seemed to be having the same problem.
Head coach Chris Petersen was outcoached by head coach Todd Grantham and it showed in Week 7. However, it’s only the second-time a Petersen-led offense has put up seven points or less in his tenure with the Washington Huskies. The last time the Huskies scored just seven points in a game was Dec. 31, 2016 against Alabama in the Peach Bowl (24-7).
If anything, this should have opened Petersen’s eyes for what’s to come in Pac-12 play. There should never be a game where running back Myles Gaskin has less than 25 touches in the game.
They did well to try and get wide receiver Dante Pettis involved. Pettis finished with seven receptions for 56 receiving yards but at times, Browning looked to force him the ball than anything else.
Utilizing the spread
The loss of wide receiver John Ross has hurt this team’s offense in 2017 but they’ve got talent on the roster to replace him. Tight ends Hunter Bryant and Will Dissly are still viable options in the receiving game.
Bryant has 21 receptions for 314 receiving yards and a touchdown. Dissly has 12 receptions for 158 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Spreading the ball around worked in 2016, no need to change the plan in 2017. Pettis, Gaskin, Bryant and Dissly are all options for Browning to get the passing game going like a well-oiled machine. They just need to put it all together.
