2. Wimbush’s run game is unmatched

As previously mentioned, Kizer was certainly an effective runner during his time at Notre Dame. However, Wimbush is on a completely different level, averaging almost six yards per carry compared to Kizer’s 3.7 average of last year. Wimbush is currently on pace to finish the year with over 800 yards despite missing a matchup against one of the nation’s worst defenses in UNC.

Wimbush’s running abilities could be seen from the onset as he recorded 96 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries as a freshman. He maintained that pace coming into this year, putting together a Week 1 rushing performance of 106 yards and a score. Wimbush would finish the day with an 8.8 YPC average, a great start to what has been a solid first year up to this point.

What is even more impressive about Wimbush’s rushing starts is the adversity through which he records them. Unlike Kizer who was able to keep defenders on their heels due to a strong arm, Wimbush faces a stacked box almost every time he tucks and runs. With much of Notre Dame’s offense coming via basic option plays, Wimbush’s yardage has been hard-fought.

While fans are often frustrated by Wimbush’s one-dimensional approach, his effectiveness in executing his runs contributes more to the team than many realize. The Irish haven’t been known for their running quarterbacks, but most fans would trade tradition for playoffs any day of the week.
