Texas Football: 3 takeaways from overtime loss against Oklahoma State
By Zach Bigalke
1. Sam Ehlinger still has a steep learning curve for Texas
On a day when both teams found offense hard to come by, Sam Ehlinger was a big reason why Texas was even in this game. The true freshman ultimately threw the costly overtime interception that ended the game, but for much of the game against the Cowboys he put in a strong performance.
It has been a hot-and-cold season for Ehlinger, who was instrumental in near-upsets of USC in September and against Oklahoma last week in the Red River Shootout. The youngster, though, is still adjusting to the pace of college football and is prone to show off his inexperience at inopportune times.
Ehlinger finished the game with 241 yards on 22-of-35 passing, and he added the lone Texas touchdown of the day on the ground. But Ehlinger also struggled to keep the chains moving for the Longhorns, as he was continually greeted by Oklahoma State in the backfield.
Ultimately, what Texas fans will take away from this game is the fact that Ehlinger unwisely scrambled away from pressure and tossed the losing throw right to Ramon Richards. But it is important to remember that Ehlinger is still a work in progress, and he still offers Texas the best hope for success moving forward.
