Orange Bowl

Capital One Orange Bowl:  Miami (ACC) vs. Penn State (Big Ten/SEC/Notre Dame)
Where: Hard Rock Stadium (Miami, Fla.)
When: Dec. 30 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN
Last week’s projection: Miami vs. Ohio State

Penn State shouldn’t be here right now, that’s what fans, coaches, and players are telling themselves right now.

They shouldn’t be sitting in the Orange Bowl right now. However, thanks to Ohio State’s comeback in Columbus this past Saturday, they are in the Orange Bowl and they have a long way back up the ladder if they want to reach the playoff again. Even if they win out and find themselves with a chance to reach the playoff, it may not be enough. Kind of like in 2016.

Miami is in a much different situation than the Nittany Lions, you can actually make the case that Miami’s road to the playoff is much harder and is only beginning this week. The Hurricanes host Virginia Tech on Saturday night and after that host Notre Dame, once you get past those two you’ve got a possible showdown with Clemson in the ACC title game. The season begins for the Hurricanes, good luck.

Week 10 outlook: Penn State’s climb back into the playoff makes a stop in East Lansing this weekend with and a game against Michigan State. A loss here and you can kiss the playoff and maybe even the New Year’s Six sad goodbyes. For Miami, a win this week would only slightly validate what they’ve done this season. It’s small step but a step in the right direction, a loss would slot Clemson into the ACC’s top spot and place them in a spot where they’ve got a chance to get back into the playoff themselves.
