College Football Playoff 2017: What top 4 should have looked like in Week 10
By Jesse Smith
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, faced No. 2 Penn State which was the game of the week and an instant classic. Down 11 points, JT Barrett hit 16 straight passes to help lead his Buckeyes back to a 39-38 win in regulation. With arguably the biggest win of the year, the Buckeyes are now a major threat to make the College Football Playoff.
While special teams did allow a kickoff return touchdown to Saquon Barkley, the Buckeyes’ defense did a great job bottling up one of the best running backs in the nation. Barkley only had 44 yards rushing on 21 carries and a touchdown for a 2.1 yards per carry average. He only had four catches for 23 yards and when you add that up he only had 67 yards from scrimmage which is a season-low for the star.
If you contain Barkley, you are doing your job. The Buckeyes kept Penn State under 300 total yards for the game if it wasn’t for the miscues and rough calls, maybe Penn State doesn’t score 38.
Barrett entered his name into the Heisman race with a spectacular game Saturday. He went 33-for-39 passing for 328 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 17 carries for 95 yards. Yes, that is over 400 total yards against the No. 2 in the nation. For a guy who hasn’t played well against the top-tier competition as of late, Barrett stepped up in a major way when his team needed him.
