Memphis Football: 3 takeaways from win over Tulsa in Week 10
By Dana Becker
3. Ferguson strong again
When Ferguson arrived in Knoxville, he was viewed as a future NFL quarterback.
A four-star recruit, Ferguson led his high school to a pair of state titles in North Carolina.
However, he redshirted in 2013 and never took a snap with the Vols, leaving the school and attending a community college in Kansas before settling in at Memphis.
And boy are the Tigers happy he did.
Ferguson, now a senior, had his second straight 298-yard passing day vs. Tulsa, giving him eight games this year with at least 279 yards. He has also thrown a touchdown in all but one contest, tossing four in his latest outing.
In his first season with Memphis last year, Ferguson threw for 3,698 yards with 32 touchdowns. He is well on his way to eclipsing those numbers and has the Tigers playing for a conference title.
With two games left, the fate of Memphis in the American will be decided on the field. The Tigers host SMU and East Carolina to close out November. They are currently ahead of the Mustangs, but both have one loss on their resume.
Maybe winning the American isn’t what Ferguson set out to accomplish when he enrolled in the SEC, but he is proving his worth to NFL scouts with each passing week.
