1. Miami eclipses 90 penalty yards

One of the more interesting developments of Miami’s impressive season has been their undisciplined nature in terms of penalties. The Hurricanes are one of the most heavily penalized teams in the country, averaging over 63 penalty yards per game, good for 95th in the nation. In a game of inches, penalties have come close to determining quite a few of Miami’s games so far.

What is most odd is that they are committing all of these penalties under new head coach Mark Richt. Richt coached a very disciplined team during his 15 year tenure with Georgia, but the Hurricanes may still be experiencing growing pains in what is only their second year with their recently added coach.

While penalty yardage is typically difficult to predict due to the nature of game flow, Miami has clearly struggled up to this point. They matchup against a Notre Dame team that has fared significantly better under Brian Kelly and his revamped coaching staff, but they still aren’t quite where they want to be as they currently fork up over 50 yards per game in penalties themselves.

With games being decided by measurements as minute as centimeters thanks to today’s technology, every yard certainly counts. Many expect this game to come down to the wire, meaning excess penalty yardage very well could determine the game. If that is the case, give the advantage to the Irish.
