Big Ten Football Power Rankings 2017: Badgers remain steady in Week 11
By Shane Lunnen
Michigan jumped out to a huge lead against Maryland and beat the Terps 35-10. The Wolverines get to the eight win mark before tough games to finish the season.
Michigan was out gained in total yards by Maryland, but only the final score matters. The Wolverines played a near flawless quarter in a half, scoring 28 points. Then they let off the gas and let the Terps score 10 points in the second half before scoring a late meaningless touchdown. Making his second start, quarterback Brandon Peters threw two touchdowns and running back Chris Evans added two more on the ground.
Michigan has looked better since their loss to Penn State three weeks ago, but the quality of opponents has played a part in their three wins. Michigan now travels to Madison before their yearly showdown with Ohio State. Eight wins may be it for the Wolverines this year.
With the Big Ten East on the line in Columbus, Michigan State got completely steamrolled by Ohio State. It was hard to expect Michigan State to win on the road after Ohio State was humiliated against Iowa, but the Spartans did not bother to even show up.
The Spartans had less than 200 yards of total offense and failed to find the end zone. They also turned over the ball three times and their defense could not slow down JT Barrett and company. There is nothing else to say about this one for Sparty. Mark Dantonio should burn the tape and never look back.
It has still been a bounce back year for Michigan State and they can end on a high note. With games against Maryland and Rutgers, the Spartans should win nine games and get to a higher tier bowl game a season after only winning three games.
Penn State was down to Rutgers 6-0 early in the second quarter when they finally decided to show up and shake off the previous two losses. The Lions won 35-6.
Quarterback Trace McSorley was great, tossing the ball for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He also added another 44 yards and a score on the ground. While McSorley was good, Rutgers became the latest team to completely sell out to stop Saquon Barkley. It worked for the most part as they held Barkley to his lowest rushing total of the season at 35 yards. He did find the endzone twice though.
Penn State has two more winnable games against Nebraska and Maryland. If they win them both, the Lions still have a chance at a New Years Six bowl game. Not what they had envisioned at the beginning of the season, but still a good consolation.
