College Football Playoff 2017: Which 2-loss teams can still make it?
3. Ohio State Buckeyes (8-2, 6-1 in Big Ten)
Two weeks ago, everybody had stuck a fork in the Ohio State Buckeyes after their embarrassing loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes, a game in which they gave up 55 points. In a system where style points matter, the Buckeyes were on the opposite end of that concept after they looked absolutely horrible against the Hawkeyes.
This loss had put the Buckeyes at 8-2 overall, and with the premise of no two-loss teams ever making it, Ohio State’s loss had all the tabloids and media outlets ripping on the Big Ten’s chances as perhaps their best team on paper now had a two in the loss column and one really bad loss at the hands of Iowa.
In Week 11, the Buckeyes took the phrase “style points” and turned it back in their favor as they pummeled the Michigan State Spartans in a defacto Big Ten East title game. Pairing this with the loss to several teams in front of them, and now we are back to looking at multiple teams from the Big Ten with a shot at a playoff berth rather than none.
Ohio State will have a pretty light week as they host Illinois in Week 12 before heading to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan. With the Wolverines ranked in multiple polls and a chance for them to knock of Wisconsin this week, that game could prove to be another nice resume booster before the Buckeyes take on the Badgers in the league title game.
Of course, for any two-loss team, another loss and they are out, but if the Buckeyes keep winning- it is going to be very difficult to argue how they are not one of the best four teams in the country.
