Washington State Football: 3 possible landing spots for Mike Leach
3. Nebraska Cornhuskers
I’m putting Nebraska because it’s the most obvious. Bill Moos is the new AD at the University of Nebraska and he’s the man most associated with bringing the highly successful Mike Leach to Pullman. Moos helped Leach upgrade the facilities and get them at least to average in order to land the talent Leach needed to improve the abysmal Cougs defense and to run his air-raid offense. Moos understands Leach, and his quirks, and the two know each others demands and expectations.
For Moos, he wants to hire his guy and leave his mark on the Huskers program. Mike Riley is a really awkward fit and seems to be no one’s guy in Lincoln, and they have to recover from firing Bo Pelini who won 10 games in red and white. Leach is a proven winner, and while it may take a season or two to get the type of kids he needs on campus — Leach will win. The question is if he can find another defensive coordinator as astute as Alex Grinch.
It’s easy to assume Grinch could be up for head coaching jobs after this performance, and even asked to take over at Washington State if Leach does leave for Lincoln.
The only question in Nebraska is if Leach wants to be that landlocked, being a pirate and a fan of places like Hawaii and Key West he’ll have quite the travel. On the administrative end — Moos will have his work cut out for him convincing the old guard that this quirky loud mouth who talks too long in interviews is the right pick for such a traditional power.
