10 things all college football fans should be thankful for
2. The Rivalries
College Football houses some of the best rivalries in all of American sports. Ohio State-Michigan, Auburn-Alabama, Texas-Oklahoma, Miami-Florida State, just to name a few.
Ohio State-Michigan, commonly known as “The Game”, has been ranked by many as one of the top rivalries in all of American sports, up with the Red Sox-Yankees, Lakers-Celtics, and Bears-Packers. Nothing fueled that rivalry more than the “Ten Year War” between Michigan coach Bo Schembechler and Ohio State coach Woody Hayes.
There are other rivalries that, while not getting the media attention others get, are just as nasty as some of them. The Iowa-Iowa State rivalry was stopped not once, but twice in the series history due to constant fighting between both universities until it was revived for good in 1977. Then there are the rivalries that died of realignment, such as Nebraska-Oklahoma, which seemingly determined the winner of the Big 8/Big 12 every year.
Rivalries are a sacred tradition that when we’re not at each others throat’s, should be appreciated.
