10 things all college football fans should be thankful for
5. Creation of the Playoff
By the time the 2013 season had come around, it was clear that the end of the BCS system was near and a playoff would be implemented for the 2014 season. The playoff has done nothing but good things for college football since its inception.
Many had openly criticized the BCS system since its creation for the 1998 college football season. Throughout the first half of the 2000’s, many screamed for the abolition of the system because of the controversy it’s created. Controversies such as Miami’s exclusion from the 2000 BCS title game, Nebraska’s inclusion in the 2001 BCS title game, the USC-LSU final ranking controversy in 2003 and a handful of other issues.
By the time the BCS came to an end after the 2013 season, many were open and ready to the new playoff format. The validation of the playoff’s legitimacy came after #4 Ohio State ran past #1 Alabama and #2 Oregon en route to their national championship. The playoff has also produced memorable championship games between Alabama and Clemson the past two years as well.
