College Football 2017: 3 under-the-radar games for Week 13
By Brett Renner
2. West Virginia vs. No. 3 Oklahoma
Next up on our list of under-the-radar games for the week, the Mountaineers will take on the Sooners out of Oklahoma. A game where Oklahoma is heavily favored and West Virginia is already being counted out. But hold on folks, Baker Mayfield won’t be starting this game but will appear at some point after his obscene gestures against Kansas last week. With so many distractions surrounding this Oklahoma football team, I think it will be just enough to keep West Virginia in the game Saturday.
The Mountaineers are coming off a tough loss at home last week against Texas but up until that game, West Virginia had collected back to back solid wins against Iowa State and Kansas State. Behind Will Grier and their powerful offense which ranks 7th in the country in total yards per game, I believe the Mountaineers will put up a fight. The key for West Virginia will be their passing offense and if they can get a the poor secondary that Oklahoma has.
For the Sooners, they come into this matchup ranking third nationally while sporting a 10-1 record where their only defeat came against Iowa State back in Week 5. The Sooners went over a few speed bumps last week even though they demolished Kansas. During the game, a camera caught Baker Mayfield making an obscene gesture towards the Kansas fans which led to head coach Lincoln Riley taking away his title of captain. The University also announced that Mayfield will not start this game but he will play.
The Sooners are the only team West Virginia hasn’t beaten in the BIG12 since they joined in 2012. Oklahoma will be looking for their 24th win in their last 25 BIG12 games, but not so fast, this win isn’t going to come easy. This game is going to be a barn burner and I won’t be surprised if 80 points get put up between the two teams.
