Arkansas Football: Legacy of Bret Bielema with Razorbacks
Underperforming in SEC play in his final season
The 3-5 record that the Hogs posted in 2016 seems great compared to the one win managed in 2017. This season did not start out well for the Hogs with a convincing loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in Arkansas’s only contest with a non-conference Power Five opponent.
An overtime loss to the Texas A&M Aggies in the following game to TCU could have gone either way. Yet, the defeat at the hands of the South Carolina Gamecocks is where things really started to go bad for the Hogs.
Arkansas lost by at least 26 points to South Carolina, Alabama, and Auburn in three consecutive games. Freshman quarterback Cole Kelley got a good taste of top-level SEC action in the two losses to the Alabama schools. Kelley is the presumed starter for the Hogs in 2018.

There was a brief stint of positive scores for the Hogs, with two straight victories over Ole Miss and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Yet, even the win over Coastal Carolina came with an asterisk since the Hogs only won by one point against the worst team in the Sun Belt. It’s a shame that Bielema’s career ended with a disappointing win over Coastal Carolina and three straight losses to LSU, Mississippi State, and the Missouri Tigers.
