Virginia Tech didn’t manage to return to the ACC championship game this year, as Miami took the ACC Coastal from the Hokies. But it was still a successful campaign in Blacksburg. Justin Fuente‘s team has a shot at reaching 10 wins for the second straight season. They will also play in a bowl game for the 25th straight season, as Fuente maintained the streak started by Frank Beamer.

Much of Virginia Tech’s success in 2017 stemmed from a stout defense and strong special-teams play. The Hokies held opponents to an average of 13.5 points per game, including shutouts of Old Dominion and FCS Delaware. A mediocre offense was the biggest stumbling block standing in the way of another division title.

While they didn’t get the chance to play in Charlotte, Virginia Tech will still sit comfortably among the top 25 teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings of 2017 for the second straight year. Ranked at No. 22 last year after the loss to Clemson in the ACC championship, the Hokies will be right around that same position this year.
