1. CEO type coach

It appears Arizona State is moving to an NFL style model of coaching with hiring Edwards. The business like approach is likely to not translate well to the college game.

It seems like they want Edwards to be the CEO type coach with a hands off approach to the game, leaving it up to the coordinators and position coaches to do the bulk work on game days. This can work with the right staff, but it is hard to say if it will work at Arizona State. It is expected for Edwards to remain most if not all of Todd Graham’s staff. Could be a good or bad thing.

It also means they see what everyone else sees. Edwards is a bad in-game coach so if they keep him as a figure head and let the coordinators do all the work, they still have a chance to be successful. Which brings us back to why would you fire your already successful coach on a big gamble?

This is a big gamble hire for Ray Anderson and he has tied himself to the success or failure of Edwards. This is an unorthodox move, especially considering the college experienced options Anderson had to choose from. Nevertheless, if Edwards fails, and there is a high probability of failure, then Anderson could also find himself out of Tempe. It will sure make things interesting in 2018 and beyond.
