3. Malcolm Perry is a beast but can’t do everything

Navy’s offense was a case of Malcolm Perry or bust on Saturday. Perry racked up 250 rushing yards on 30 carries. He ran for a touchdown, added a two-yard reception on Zach Abey’s only pass completion of the game, and kept Navy drives going with his strong play.

In the handful of plays when Perry didn’t touch the football, Navy struggled to move downfield. On the 17 plays where Perry wasn’t actively involved in the production, the Midshipmen gained just 44 yards. Per play, Perry was four times as productive as the rest of Navy’s offense.

Over the course of 2017, Perry finished the year ranked 11th nationally in all-purpose yardage. Navy’s offense relied heavily on the backfield tandem of Perry and quarterback Zach Abey.

Perry held up his end of the bargain, outpacing his season average by over 100 yards in a winnable rivalry game. It wasn’t enough to ultimately claim victory, but it showcased the skill level of the workhorse back.
