Lane Kiffin is the coach college football needs

Florida Atlantic football takes on Akron in the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday and Lane Kiffin will continue to be the star of the show.

Lane Kiffin’s coaching trajectory has been anything but ideal. From the Oakland Raiders to Tennessee to USC to FAU, the former Fresno State quarterback hasn’t taken the conventional route. After spending three years at Alabama Kiffin moved on to his next adventure.

Getting out of the shadow of Nick Saban has afforded Kiffin more freedom, especially when it comes to social media. Kiffin’s antics on Twitter have provided a good laugh (or two) as well as additional spotlight on himself and his new university.

As the Owls prepare for the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl against Akron it’s only fitting to take a look back at some of Kiffin’s more memorable moments online this season.

1. Rat Poison

Kiffin’s previous employer, Saban, was critical of the high praise his team was receiving from the media earlier this season. To combat the hype, Saban called those compliments “Rat Poison”. Coincidentally that phrase appears on Kiffin’s social media the next day.

2. What point spread?

Leading by seven with time expiring against Marshall Kiffin’s team elected to take a safety rather than punt the ball away. That last second score was inconsequential to the result, but not to the betting markets – and you can be sure Kiffin was well aware.

3. Lane Kiffin recruits Lamar Jackson

It’s worth noting that Kiffin has tweeted just about everyone under the sun and told them they need to #cometofau or #thefaU. He pushed the envelope just a bit when he sent (and subsequently deleted) this tweet to former Heisman-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson.

4. The Tennessee head coaching vacancy

The debacle that was the Tennessee head coaching search was the spectacle of the offseason. If the Vols hadn’t hired Jeremy Pruitt who knows who they might have offered next. Kiffin had at least one suggestion.

5. What’s the deal with ripped jeans?

In one of his more memorable press conference rants of 2017, Saban lamented the state of jeans in modern-day America. He asked the media how ripped jeans went from being an embarrassment to a fashion statement and Lane Kiffin, well, he had some fun with the diatribe.
