College Football 5th Quarter: New Year’s Six recap, Championship preview
2. The Sugar Bowl
The Sugar Bowl started while the Rose Bowl was ending, around 9 p.m. ET on January 1st. The Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers were meeting for the thirdtime in a row in the College Football Playoff. The trilogy, much like in The Godfather series, didn’t live up to the first two and Bama beat Clemson 24-6. The most exciting moment of the game was when Bama defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne came away with an interception, and then followed it up with a receiving touchdown from the two yard line.
More: What did we learn from the Sugar Bowl?
It was a four point game before the big guy touchdown, and then Mack Wilson intercepted a Kelly Bryant pass and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown. After that the game was all but over for the reeling Tigers. Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts totaled 160 yards and threw two touchdowns. Hurts didn’t commit a turnover. On the other sideline, Kelly Bryant threw two interceptions and ran 19 times for 19 yards.
The Crimson Tide won the first edition of this trilogy back in the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2016, with Clemson winning round two a year ago. In the coaches film room, the most interesting thing that happened was Gary Patterson disappeared and Larry Fedora made himself at home with his feet up and snacking away the entire game.
