Georgia Football: 5 reasons Bulldogs win CFB Playoff Championship
4. Jalen Hurts is going to be contained
Entering Alabama’s final offensive drive of last season’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game Jalen Hurts had much of a positive impact on the game. Hurts had completed 10 passes so far for 86 yards and added 33 yards on the ground. With one touchdown pass, Hurts had tallied 119 yards in the first 55 minutes of the game. Outside of his final touchdown drive, Hurts was mediocre at best.
He didn’t do anything special against the Tigers this time around either. Hurts had 160 total offensive yards (120 through the air and 40 on the ground) with two passing touchdowns. The Alabama defense has been so good that he hasn’t truly had to take his team on his back and win a football game like Jake Fromm had to do against Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl.
Georgia isn’t a particular sack-oriented team, but they did finish neck and next with Alabama and Texas A&M as far as total tackles for a loss this season. Missouri led the conference with 103 TFLs while Alabama and Texas A&M had 89 and Georgia had 87. The Bulldogs are more than capable of getting into the backfield and causing problems.
Hurts has been a competent quarterback during his time at Alabama but he hasn’t been transcendent. Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield had a good run before being brought back down to earth in the second half of the Rose Bowl. Hurts will be lucky to make it that far.
