The first edition of the Sooners in the Playoff with Mayfield under center did not look as good as it did the second time around. But, both times Mayfield led the Sooners to the Playoff, it resulted in a loss in the Semifinal.

Oklahoma’s only slip up during the 2015 regular season came in a loss in the Red River Shootout to the Texas Longhorns, then coached by Charlie Strong. Demolishing the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a de facto Big 12 Championship Game in 2015 sealed OU’s fate as a Playoff team.

Legendary quarterback Deshaun Watson, head coach Dabo Swinney, and Clemson were way too much for the Sooners to handle in the postseason. OU stayed competitive early, but Clemson took control in the second half to the tune of a 37-20 win.

This OU squad was a quality team that was among the nation’s best. Few teams that met either Clemson or Alabama in any of the four years of the Playoff met a good fate. OU learned the hard way what that was like to round out the 2015 campaign.
