Big Ten Football: Power Ranking every Big Ten coach
13. D.J. Durkin, Maryland
- 2017 record: 4-8 (2-7)
- 2018 B1G recruiting class rank: 4 of 14
Normally being ranked No. 13 of 14 usually resembles a lot of negativity, but the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of questions still hovering over D.J. Durkin and his Maryland Terrapins.
Fresh off his first season with the team, there Terrapins opened up 2017 with a convincing and impressive road victory over the Texas Longhorns. Unfortunately, the start to the season was bittersweet as the Terrapins not only lost their starting quarterback Tyrell Pigrome, but also soon after were without their backup Kasim Hill– putting the load of the entire rest of the season on third-string Max Bortenschlager.
Who is to say what the Terps would have made of the 2017 season had they remained somewhat healthy throughout the year, especially at quarterback. Because of this, it is hard to judge Durkin and his progression with the program so far in his short tenure.
Maryland boasts one of the best incoming classes in the Big Ten for 2018 and have been in the top half of the league for quite some time now with no intentions of slowing down. No one is questioning Durkin’s coaching ability or recruiting prowess, but it will take some time to see the program really take off from what it is now.
