2. Amari Gainer, Outside linebacker

4-star recruit Amari Gainer is a Tallahassee native, and a Seminole legacy, so Florida State was always on his radar. His father, Herb Gainer, played as a wide receiver under legendary coach Bobby Bowden.  Nonetheless, Gainer almost didn’t commit to the school.

When Jimbo Fisher’s defected to the SEC, Gainer started to look at offers from Miami and Oklahoma.  Once Willie Taggart took over, though. Gainer immediately signed with the ‘Noles and became one of Taggart’s best ambassadors. In a quote to the Tallahassee Democrat, Gainer says, “I’m definitely going to try to get some more guys to try and build up Tribe18.”

Gainer played defensive end in high school but his coverage skills and versatility will make him an ideal back, particularly once he bulks up a bit. His speed is undeniable–in practices, he is one of the first off the line and react to the ball.  He’ll play a major role in special teams and he should do well in pass rushing roles as well.

At the end of the day, though, it is not Gainer’s amazing athleticism that will be the best gift to the team–it is his enthusiasm, commitment, and leadership which will make the Seminoles a cohesive unit.

Gainer is the No. 23 linebacker in the 247Sports composite rankings and the No. 319 player overall.
