The UCLA front seven was abysmal in 2017. No team was worse against the run that the Bruins who finished dead last in Division I allowing a whopping 287.4 yards per game on the ground. They were that bad and they lost defensive lineman Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and linebacker Kenny Young to the NFL.
Tuioti-Mariner led UCLA in sacks, registering 7.5 while Young led the team in tackles. Replacing them was never going to be easy, but UCLA stacked their recruiting class with plenty of physical defenders that play close to the line of scrimmage. Outside linebacker Bo Calvert, a 4-star U.S. Army All-American is going to find a way to get himself on the field quickly and could be a mutli-year starter for the Bruins if he lives up to expectations.
Otito Ognonnia has the potential to be the run stuffer in the middle. The 6-foot-3 defensive tackle is coming to campus already weighing 300 pounds. He’s the type of player that can eat up blocks, freeing up the rest of the defense to make tackles before the running backs can get to the second and (in UCLA’s case) third levels.
