Another staple of the Iowa program throughout Kirk Ferentz’s tenure is a punishing running game that features a running back that can do a little bit of everything. Backs such as Ladell Betts, Fred Russell, Shonn Greene, and most recently Akrum Wadley were fantastic running backs for the Hawkeyes. The Class of 2018 version of that running back is Green Bay prospect Henry Geil.

Geil was a star running back at Pleble High School near Green Bay, competing in the same region as fellow Hawkeye commit Jack Plumb. Geil ran for 1,335 yards and 17 touchdowns his senior season, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. He helped lead Pleble to the Wisconsin Division I Playoffs where they exited in the first round in a loss to Appleton North.

Geil isn’t that fastest running back in the world, running a 4.8 40-yard dash, but he is a physical runner who doesn’t get caught from behind. His playing style is very similar to the aforementioned Shonn Greene, a physical runner who will run over, around or through you. A nice bonus is he is a serviceable receiver out of the backfield as well. Geil joins an already crowded Iowa backfield, but he has the opportunity to climb the depth chart early.
