Harley was an electrifying player who could really do it all. in addition to playing running back, he was also a safety, quarterback, end, kicker and punter. Harley’s career was most noticeable for two things. He was the catalyst of the first Ohio State team to ever beat Michigan in 1919. It is said that Michigan coach Fielding Yost, spoke to the Ohio State team following the game and commended Harley’s performance. The second is that following his career, his play helped drive the idea of a new stadium for the Buckeyes which led to the construction of Ohio Stadium, which is still affectionately known to some as “The House that Harley Built”.
Harley would play a season in the NFL for Chicago Staleys but was forced to retire due to military-related health issues.
