Some will remember Alan Ameche for his famous touchdown in the 1958 NFL Championship Game, also known as the “Greatest Game Ever Played”. But, many die hard college football fans will remember his career as a Wisconsin Badger. Ameche ran for 3,345 yards in his career and 25 touchdowns, both NCAA records at the time of his departure.

Ameche was actually very close to not going to Wisconsin at all, as he was pressured to go to Notre Dame, but defiantly chose the Badgers. He was able to play as a freshman due to the Korean War, and rushed for 824 yards and four touchdowns. His sophomore season saw him run for 946 yards and seven touchdowns. Ameche’s junior season was just as good, rushing for 801 yards and five touchdowns.

Ameche’s senior season however, put him in the spotlight. While he only rushed for 641 yards, he scored nine touchdowns, a big number for the day. He was rewarded with 1954 Heisman Trophy and a unanimous First Team All-American. Ameche was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 1955 NFL Draft.
