UCLA Football: 5 storylines to follow during 2018 spring ball
3. Running back by committee?
The Bruins don’t have a true feature back and that’s something I think Chip Kelly will fix as soon as possible. He has had big time backs up at Oregon like LeGarrette Blount, LaMichael James, and Jonathan Stewart. The Bruins 2018 roster has two players with experience in Soso Jamabo and Bolu Olorunfunmi. The former is a 6-foot-2 and 210 pound senior who averages 4.9 yards per carry and 13 rushing touchdowns over his career.
Olorunfunmi, also a senior, is 5-foot-10 and 215 pounds. Kelly had been really creative in using a mix of scat-backs and power backs in his time at Oregon.
Look for Kelly to try and find a power back as his main ball carrier and a speed back to play slot and get involved in the outside zone, buck sweep, and jet sweep game. Jamabo has averaged 12.1 yards per reception and could be used on the outside as a slot while Olorunfunmi could be the power back. Olorunfunmi has averaged 4.6 yards per carry and scored nine touchdowns in his career.
Kelly’s staff brought in Kazmeir Allen, that scat back type he likes, to play the slot and carry the football. Allen is a three-star recruit from California and at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds should be college-ready by the end of camp.
