2. Bruins must find a new quarterback

Devon Modster lit up the Kansas State Wildcats in the Catcus Bowl in 2017. Modster, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound quarterback from Mission Viejo, Calif., has  a leg up on the competition. Modster threw for 671 yards on the season with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Against the Wildcats, Modster threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions on 62 percent passing. With the Bruins’ coach already fired, Modster was staking his claim at the 2018 starting role.

Modster will have to hold off Washington graduate transfer K.J. Carta-Samuels who is also 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds and was the back up to Jake Browning for the Huskies. Samuels has thrown for 8.0 and 8.2 yards per attempt over his sophomore and junior seasons, respectively. Matt Lynch was 2-for-3 passing his entire freshman year, although he did throw a touchdown.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson isn’t an early enrollee and not arriving until July for summer school and camp will put him behind the other three competitors. Thompson-Robinson is uber-talented but the learning curve could hold him back.
