College Football: 5 takeaways from April 7 spring games
5. TCU, West Virginia and BYU
The TCU Horned Frogs’ 2018 spring game was not televised. Purdue (noon, BTN), UAB (2pm, CUSA.tv) and Houston (4:30pm, Facebook) are televised as Houston takes advantage of Facebook’s live TV component which is a brilliant move. Yet TCU, one of the S&P+’s pre-season top 25 programs didn’t have a televised spring game.
Fans looking to tune in to see how sweaty Gary Patterson would get in early April didn’t have that opportunity in 2018. I was really interested personally in seeing life after quarterback Kenny Hill for the Frogs’ offense and any chance to see the TCU 4-2-5 defense is a plus.
West Virginia isn’t even holding a spring game in 2018. Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers administration for safety purposes as Morgantown prepares for a winter storm in the early days of spring. The East Coast has been blanketed this winter and they’re expecting another snow storm this weekend. Fans miss out on a chance to see Will Grier in action one last spring before heading off to the NFL. Holgorsen’s high powered offense is always a treat to watch and I was looking forward to seeing it in action.
The BYU Cougars didn’t have their spring game televised, either. This is even more of a shocker as BYU owns its own television network through Brigham Young University. If Houston can use Facebook to present their product it would have greatly benefited the Cougars to use their own network to promote their product. BYU could use any positive football vibes after struggling since the departure of Bronco Mendenhall to the University of Virginia.
