Texas A&M Football: 10 best coaches in program history
Of the 27 head coaches in Texas A&M football program history (not included interims), picking out the 10 best ever can be a very tough task.
Texas A&M football brought in one of the best head coaches in the nation in recent years, by landing former Florida State Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher. He replaces Kevin Sumlin, who had a decently long tenure with the Aggies himself, but couldn’t quite ever get out of the mediocre to good range of season-by-season results.
The first ever recorded head coach for the Aggies took over way back in 1894, and sat at the helm for just two games. That head coach was F.D. Perkins, and he won one game and lost the other he was a part of.
Not including interim head coaches in the program’s history, Texas A&M has 27 in the full history for Aggies’ football. Fisher is just the most recent of a laundry list of those names, that had mixed results in College Station. Less than half of Texas A&M’s contracted head coaches led the team to a postseason appearance.
Moreover, the first ever coach for the Aggies to coach in more than six games was W.A. Murray, as he took part in 16 games. Murray was also the first coach for the Aggies to lead the way for more than just a single year.
Texas A&M is a blue blood type football program, so picking out the 10 best can be a very tough task. Keeping a longer tenure in College Station is a huge piece of what goes into this ranking. A few other things include the overall record, number of postseason appearances, championship appearances and wins, and the caliber of players produced.
Here’s a look at the 10 best coaches in program history for the Texas A&M Aggies.
