The angst surrounding the departure of Sumlin could have something to do with his placement on this list. However, Sumlin just could not reach that next level that many expected him to, especially after Johnny Manziel made the early jump to the pros, in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Sumlin has one of the better winning percentages of any head coach in the history of this program. Not guiding the Aggies to that next level in the SEC West played a role in his ousting in College Station following the end of the 2017 regular season.

The start of Sumlin’s time with the program was great, as he claimed the SEC Coach of the Year Award back in 2012. In 2013, Texas A&M did not live up to the hype, ulimately having to knock off head coach David Cutcliffe and the Duke Blue Devils in the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Falling short of some massive expectations is unfortunately what Sumlin is likely to be remembered for.

He is now with the Arizona Wildcats, guiding a potential 2018 Heisman contender in Khalil Tate, following a quick hiring after his departure from Texas A&M. Sumlin never finished with a losing record during his time in College Station. His consistency is admirable, but he couldn’t keep the Aggies really ever going through a complete regular season slate.
