NFL Mock Draft 2018: Complete 7-Round projections
If Calvin Ridley or Courtland Sutton had fallen this far the Dallas Cowboys might have opted to select their replacement for Dez Bryant. Instead, they’ll continue beefing up a defensive front that needs strengthening.
The defensive line is still a work in progress for the Cowboys. Defensive end Taco Charlton, their first round pick a year ago. He managed just three sacks in 16 games played with one forced fumble and one pass defended. At best, he’s a borderline bust and the pass rush simply needs more ammunition. Tyrone Crawford and David Irving can’t get it done on their own, they need help.
Vita Vea would have been the top choice here, but with him off the board the Cowboys will turn to Alabama standout Da’Ron Payne. He’s only recently made a name for himself after fighting through the stout Crimson Tide depth chart, but his fresh legs will make an immediate impact on a line that needs some punch.
Payne’s versatility could be the deciding factor when it comes time for the Cowboys to submit their pick. The 6-foot-2, 308 pound lineman caught a touchdown pass in the College Football Playoff Semi-final against Clemson. Jerry Jones has been known to appreciate showmanship and flair, and Payne brings plenty of pzazz.
