Miami Football 2018 NFL Mock Draft: Where will the Hurricanes land?
Projection: Round 2, No. 62 overall
RJ McIntosh left early school for the NFL draft because he has pro size and a quick burst. He graded out as Miami’s best defensive player for the 2017 season and Pro Football Focus considers him the fifth-best interior lineman in the 2018 class.
At 6-foot-4 and 293 pounds, McIntosh will be a 3-technique defensive tackle much like he was at Miami. NFL.com ranks him a career back up but that seems a bit harsh as once he matures he has the first step to be a pass rusher from the interior of the line.
McIntosh recorded 23 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks over his three year career at Miami. He was coached on the defensive line by Craig Kuligowski the past two seasons and “Coach Kool” has put his fair share of players in the NFL draft and onto NFL rosters over his illustrious career. He needs to improve his hand fighting and lower body base in order to handle the rigors of a 16-game NFL season against elite competition.
The Bills have Kyle Williams and Star Lotulelei who are aging veterans but both players can teach McIntosh how to improve his game and he can learn from their professionalism. His worst tape was against the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2018 Orange Bowl with his best game coming against UNC where he picked up 11 tackles.
