4. He can run

In recent years at the helm of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Brian Kelly favored a quarterback that could run the ball. At the college level, this is much more prevalent and it certainly adds to the excitement of the game.

Think of guys like Everett Golson, Malik Zaire and more recently DeShone Kizer. All could run the ball to some extent, although Golson not as much as the other two. Wimbush is no exception to this trend.

What makes Wimbush such a tantalizing prospect is the fact that he can run the ball well in addition to having great arm strength and to his advantage, Kelly calls upon him for designed quarterback runs. His 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame are solid measures for a running quarterback and he impressed through the ground perhaps more so than through the air in some instances last season.

In 2017, Wimbush was the team’s second-leading rusher behind the Irish’s starting running back, Josh Adams. In fact, he actually scored more touchdowns than the power tailback. Wimbush recorded nearly as many rushing touchdowns than passing touchdowns as he took the ball himself to the house 14 times for 804 yards on 40 attempts.

His most dominant run-heavy game was in a 29-point routing of Boston College when Wimbush went off for 210 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. One touchdown run was a 65-yarder that absolutely torched the Golden Eagles defense as seen in the video.

He’s not lighting quick like Lamar Jackson was or as elusive as Baker Mayfield, but Wimbush finds a way to pick up yardage in the ground game, and this could be extremely advantageous to his Heisman cause in 2018.
