We discussed earlier how there are opportunities for young ISU wide receivers to establish themselves in the rotation beyond the first string.

Like Schleker, Joseph Scates didn’t enroll early, but he may be too good to keep off the field. Scates had offers from all over the country – including the likes of Alabama and Oklahoma – but as National Signing Day drew near, the Cyclones gained ground and were able to close the deal. He’s a four-star prospect who was ranked as the 44th-best receiver in the nation, and is the top-ranked recruit that Campbell and company have ever brought to Ames.

It’s only natural to think that Scates will end up getting snaps sooner rather than later. At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, he’s got the size and athleticism to compete in the Big 12. In time, he may very well end up filling the void left by Allen Lazard and becoming the next great Iowa State receiver.
