Georgia Football: 5 breakout freshmen to watch in 2018
3. Tyson Campbell
While the defense certainly has some talent to replace in 2018, defensive back is not a position of weakness by any means. J.R. Reed is back, as is Deandre Baker, and despite losing Aaron Davis and Dominick Sanders, the depth should be just fine.
However, just like White with the running backs, incoming corner Tyson Campbell is just too good to keep from playing. The Floridian has the size, speed, and raw ability to not just play, but dominate as a freshman.
At 6-foot-3, the number two freshman corner in the country is the ideal size for Georgia’s defense. He knows how to use that length to his advantage, and has the quickness to complete take receivers out of the game. He’s perfect for checking bigger receivers, and will likely press the biggest receivers Georgia faces in 2018.
His skill in press is both a strength and a weakness. While he’s an elite one-on-one coverage corner, his zone and tackling could still use work. That will likely keep him from a full-time starting position, especially with the returning production. However, his range and talent make him an attractive option for special packages, or even as a safety.
I expect he’ll be used as both a nickel safety, and an ace for stopping big bodied receivers. The freshman will see plenty of time in the red zone as well. Once his tackling and zone coverage catches up to his athleticism, Campbell will be a top five corner in the country.
