Offense

Heisman Watch?

After last year’s quarterback shuffle, Houston found itself being led by a wide receiver turned quarterback. Early in last year’s game against South Florida, D’Eriq King took over under center and never looked back. Leading the Cougar’s to a win over an undefeated USF, King started every game the rest of the season.

Houston did not win every game that King started, but the new quarterback showed great potential. With a full off-season working as a quarterback, and the guidance and schematics of Coach Briles, King may have a viable shot at the Heisman award in 2018.

Houston’s offense has as much potential as anyone in the country. Coach Briles will likely run an offense similar to that of which he ran at Baylor. Now, D’Eriq King is no Bryce Petty. However, King has a much greater ability outside of the pocket and on the ground. Some may even make a comparison of D’Eriq King to say…Lamar Jackson?

Supporting Cast

King appears fully capable to lead the Houston offense to a 40+ Points per game average for the season. However, one area that needs to be filled is the running back position after the departure of Duke Catalon. Look for a battle for carries between three juniors: Kevrin Justice, Patrick Carr, and Mulbah Car. Mulbah Car has the slight edge for the moment, but the first few games of the season will allow one to stand out.

The receivers surrounding King are unproven, yet very promising. With the loss of last year’s top five wide receivers, it will take some work to find the timing with King and an assembly of wideouts. In Coach Briles style of offense, receiver by committee will be the motto. Houston will likely be in a spread offense due to their size, speed, and athleticism.

Additionally, a spread offense will give King some room to run if need be. Look for Keith Corbin and Courtney Lark to lead the receiving corps as the two players in the position with the most significant playing time and experience.
